The original Kloof was granted a lease to mine at depths of between 2,500 and 3,700 m, downdip of the Libanon mine in 1963 and its current form dates from April 2000 when the four mines amalgamated.

The current mine infrastructure consists of five shaft complexes, with operating depths between 1,300 and 3,350 m below surface, and two gold plants. The principal mining takes place on the VCR, which constitutes 88% of the Reserve, the MR 11% and the Kloof and Libanon Reefs together contribute the remaining 1%.
